Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bronxville, New York. When you require testing for drugs or alcohol using hair, Accredited Drug Testing is distinguished in hair testing, with facilities Nationwide in all cities capable of conducting such tests. In general, hair from the crown of your head measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair, can be sufficient. Hair analysis can include drug checks, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method in drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse counselors now favor hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by businesses upholding strict no-drug policies, courts, and for those under probation. One key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection time, generally spanning up to 90 days; it's conducted under watchful collection and is nearly foolproof. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer up to a roughly three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples indicating possible positive results in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: It provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being known as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
