Accredited Drug Testing brings comprehensive hair follicle drug testing to Byersville, New York. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in this area shines, with facilities available across the U.S. for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our testing options include analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing selections.

The approach to drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly rely on hair follicle tests. The primary advantage is its extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, coupled with supervised collection and near-immunity to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers in the growing strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and substances extending up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a lab drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data missing from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. Screening offers a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive find requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Cheating is tough: It's highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: Offers a view of drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
