Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Carlisle Gardens, NY. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're your specialists. With testing locations in every city nationwide, we can conduct hair tests efficiently. To qualify, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred for their zero-tolerance policy reliability and are mandated by courts and probation officers. The key benefit is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection making cheating nearly impossible. For drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

With the growing acceptance of hair analysis as an effective medium for detecting drug and alcohol usage, it is now possible to observe a prolonged timeline of substance use. Biomarkers are captured within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When trimmed near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal a drug and alcohol usage timeline extending up to 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil), yields about 100mg, which is an optimal quantity for conducting both preliminary and confirmatory tests. For assessments involving EtG, additional panels beyond the standard 10, or requiring add-ons, 150mg of specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. Notably, when mentioning head hair, the focus is solely on scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses any non-head hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing pipeline is generally broken down into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with entering the sample into the laboratory’s processing system. It’s crucial to confirm that the sample was accurately sealed and dispatched, assign a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and complete any pending data entries outside of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as an initial inspection for substance misuse. Though an economical method to preliminarily exclude drug consumption for most tests, a screen yielding a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples from the Screening phase must undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. In this step, drug substances are extracted from hair at a level much lower than other methods (like urine or saliva), thereby making hair drug testing the most complex to administer.

The Confirmation of positive screens is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, prescreened positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The complete lab processing procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests offer up to a three-month substance detection period, as opposed to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are exceptionally resilient against manipulation, rendering results more reliable.
  • Insightful usage history: Hair testing provides a comprehensive record of drug use spanning a substantial period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Generally, it takes about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to register within hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other techniques, hair drug tests tend to have higher costs.
  • Result inconsistency: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth factors can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle nestled beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
