With a focus on comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized services in Cato, New York. Whether your needs include a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with available locations throughout the country capable of conducting such tests. The requirement for a successful test is typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, and tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a method for screening drug use. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are adopting hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, such as employers, judicial systems, and probationary cases. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, approximately 90 days, overseen in a monitored process that is virtually tamper-proof. However, when it comes to detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can furnish an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be secured, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid examination for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples speculated to be positive are washed as needed. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug usage over an extended duration, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically priced higher than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as “hair follicle tests”, the analysis is conducted on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
