Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cattaraugus, NY. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and have centers in all cities across the nation ready to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests may examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. More employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key benefit is the longer detection window—up to 90 days—alongside an observed collection that’s tough to manipulate. For drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still provide the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is advisable. If no scalp hair is available, an equal measure of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair is inclusive of all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a specimen into the laboratory's system, including the verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any other data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary fast check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation in Extraction. This phase involves the extraction of drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug assessment is a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Testing reliability: It is exceptionally hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Presents usage patterns: It can show extended patterns of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and inherent variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
