Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Champlain, New York. Whether you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. With testing centers located nationwide, including every city, we are equipped to carry out hair tests efficiently. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, although body hair can also be used. Options available include drug and alcohol/ETG analyses or other bespoke hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained enhanced prominence in recent years. An increasing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse advocates are opting for hair drug testing in lieu of conventional urine tests. Employers committed to zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as legal authorities and probation officers, frequently incorporate hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage of this method lies in its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, authenticity from the observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use, typically within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extended record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collection is straightforward, it presents challenges in tampering, and is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab's system, which includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use suspicions in most samples, but positive screens must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

Should there be a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. Samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage pattern: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
