In Clark Mills, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, but body hair may suffice in certain cases. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include tailored testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has become a more prominent method in recent years. It is now preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over standard urine tests. This testing type is utilized by employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. A key advantage is its longer detection range for substances, reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and very difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by locking in biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use over a period of up to roughly three months. It is easy to collect hair, it is quite challenging to tamper with it, and it's straightforward to send.

A sample from 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect sample amount for initial and confirmative testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in a lab's processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab system, which includes ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any missing data entry that wasn't handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening is an economical approach to excluding drug use in many samples, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed to be legally valid. Presumptive positive samples from Screening need further confirmation.

When a Screening result is presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at a concentration far lower than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any sample presumed positive is cleaned as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is virtually impossible, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a usage pattern of drugs over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clark Mills, NY, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine testing methods. Hair tests promise superior detection, identifying substances used over a long period. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are not limited by short detection windows and are more resistant to tampering.

The advanced nature of hair follicle testing means employers can confidently rely on their outcomes for maintaining workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

One notable advantage of hair follicle testing in Clark Mills, NY is its extended detection period. By examining hair samples, employers receive insights into substance use over the past 90 days. This provides a robust view of an individual's history with substances and aids in making informed employment decisions.

With this extended detection window, companies in Clark Mills can better evaluate potential risks.

  • Comprehensive substance history.
  • 90-day detection period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
