In Colonie, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we have locations nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many organizations, including employers and legal bodies, prefer it over the usual urine test. This method suits zero-tolerance workplaces and probation scenarios due to its longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—and difficulty in tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests still offer the best accuracy within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a formidable technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within its growing strand's fibers. Obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers around 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. The specimen should ideally be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's secure seal and proper shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid appraisal for drug presence. Although Screening provides a cost-effective mechanism for excluding drugs in most samples, a court-admissible result necessitates confirmation of a positive screen. Presumptively positive Screening samples mandate further confirmation.

When a sample is tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection span.
  • Cheating deterrence: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to confirm recent use: Drug presence becomes apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage in Colonie, NY, over traditional urine tests. Its higher detection accuracy and reliability make it a preferred choice in various scenarios, especially where accuracy is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
