Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cortlandt, New York. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing maintains testing centers nationwide, ready to administer hair tests. To proceed, individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized elements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court officials, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. The primary advantage of hair testing lies in its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection period. The tests are conducted under observation, making them nearly impossible to cheat, although urine tests still excel at detecting drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in the growing hair strand encapsulate biomarkers that indicate long-term drug and alcohol history. Hair collected near the scalp offers a detection window of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other categories such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four crucial stages within the lab processing of a drug test result, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its preliminary integration into a lab’s system. This step verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes necessary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to hold in court. Samples that display a presumptively positive result in Screening need subsequent verification.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods such as urine or oral fluids, making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any screening results that are positive is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that preliminarily test positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab workflow from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
