Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug analyses in Cuba, New York. If you're in need of a hair screening for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair-based testing, with facilities available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown, or other body areas may be tested. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair tests.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method in drug screening processes. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analyses instead of the usual urine tests. These tests support employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and probationers. Key advantages include extended detection periods of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to falsification. For recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests still hold accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures extended-term biomarkers by embedding them within the growing hair strand's fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, approximating 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness), yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is prudent to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If obtaining scalp hair is not feasible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be collected. "Head hair" exclusively indicates scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab consists of four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's workflow. This process involves confirming that the sample has been correctly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening entails a swift preliminary check for drug abuse markers. Although Screening economically rules out drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for court usage. Samples testing positive in Screening require further verification.

In the event of a positive result during Screening, additional hair is derived from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Any positive Screening findings are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is accredited by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter range.
  • Resistance to deception: It's notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Historical insight: It outlines a drug usage trend over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cuba, NY, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. A key advantage is its superior reliability and accuracy in identifying past substance use. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses are less prone to tampering, ensuring trustworthy results that employers, courts, and substance abuse experts depend on for a comprehensive assessment. This makes it a favored option in various professional environments.

Extended Detection Window

In Cuba, NY, hair follicle testing's extended detection window of up to 90 days offers employers a thorough insight into an individual’s substance use history. Unlike urine tests that detect recent usage, hair analysis encompasses a broad retrospective view, making it invaluable for employers aiming to maintain a safe, drug-free workplace. This comprehensive capability positions hair testing as a preferred choice for long-term assessment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests, employed in Cuba, NY, provide a robust defense against sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily adulterated, hair-based analyses ensure reliable and indisputable outcomes. This tamper-resistant nature makes them an effective solution for employers and legal entities seeking trustworthy results that hold up, maintaining the integrity and accuracy in substance screening procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
