Located in Cumberland Head, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. As specialists in hair and alcohol testing, our centers, which are located across the country, are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, hair samples taken from the crown or elsewhere on the body are suitable. This testing can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle tests are becoming a preferred method for drug screening. These tests are now mandated by several employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts, instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair testing for its extended detection period of up to 90 days, its oversight during collection, and its resistance to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When obtained directly from the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and various drugs. Hair retrieval is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for mailing.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG enhancements and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be procured. Head hair specifically references scalp hair. In contrast, body hair denotes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The hair drug testing procedure involves four primary stages, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the first phase of processing a specimen within a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening encompasses an initial brief assessment for illicit drugs. Though Screening provides a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally permissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

The verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine evaluations which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Showcases usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than just recently.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
