Based in Depew, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol screening, they operate centers across cities Nationwide. A sample requires ideally 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown, though body hair may be used. Testing covers a spectrum including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored hair test solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug screening has gained traction as a preferred testing approach. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists over the traditional urine test. Utilized by firms enforcing strict anti-drug policies and monitoring individuals on probation, it offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, almost impossible to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use, within 5 days, the urine test remains the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical record of alcohol and other drug usage due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the expanding hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's relatively hard to tamper with, and it's easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, comprising around 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of misuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly option for dismissing drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen must be verified for court compliance. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most complex technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to evade, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: They can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
