Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Deposit, New York. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair testing with centers available nationwide that conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is utilized. These hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test lies in its extended detection period, up to 90 days, with observed collection making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is emerging as a dynamic instrument for identifying substance use. It captures a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeline for substance use. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

An optimal specimen consists of a 1.5-inch length containing around 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair suitable for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or panels greater than 10, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. It's advantageous to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step to incorporate a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process checks the sample's seal and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody resource.

Screening conducts a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. While a cost-efficient means to exclude drug presence in most samples, any sample that tests positive in Screening necessitates a subsequent confirmation for legal acceptance.

In cases where Screening indicates positive results, additional hair is collected from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug tests.

The Confirmation of any Screening-identified positive is achieved through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all potential positive samples are cleansed accordingly. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to compromise: The integrity of a hair drug test is highly resistant to manipulation, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides insights into usage patterns over time, rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," this evaluation examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
