Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dover, New York. For those requiring a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this domain, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair may be utilized. These tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for conducting drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over the traditional urine test method. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and people on probation. Its main advantage is a longer drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, with samples collected in a supervised manner, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, when testing for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still considered the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers in its growing fibers. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to approximately 90 days. It's easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil width) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, collect an equivalent quantity of body hair. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample enters a lab’s system. It entails checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift assessment for drug use. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to identify drug use in most samples, positive screens must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For Screening-positive samples, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
