Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Dresden, New York. Whenever a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in these tests and provide service across all cities Nationwide. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown, or body hair can be used. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle tests have increasingly become the standard for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. A hair test's major advantage is its extended detection window, often effective for up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions and virtually impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests still hold superiority when checking for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, allowing hair to offer an extended history of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for nearly 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which serves as the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or test panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg is made. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the entry of a specimen into a laboratory’s workflow. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by electronic custody systems.

Screening acts as an initial scan for unlawful substances. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive is essential for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary validation.

In cases of presumptive positive results at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This involves drawing drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex to implement.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome takes place through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptively positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for about 90 days, compared to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It furnishes a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers substantial benefits over the conventional urine tests in Dresden, NY. Its formidable strength lies in its superior detection range and undeniable reliability. Enhanced Substance Detection is one of the core advantages, enabling identification of drug use that standard urine tests might miss. This makes hair testing the preferred choice for a more robust and comprehensive evaluation.

Employers in Dresden, NY, increasingly favor hair follicle tests due to the extended detection period. Contrasted with urine tests, which can detect recent drug use, hair testing provides insights into long-term substance use. Long-Term Substance Insights are invaluable for employers with strict no-drug policies, offering a thorough picture of the applicant or employee's commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Dresden, NY, offers a prolonged detection timeline, unmatched by other testing methods. With a window extending up to 90 days, it furnishes employers with a detailed view of a person's drug use history. This lengthened detection range presents employers with a deeper insight into potential long-term substance use patterns, ensuring they make informed hiring or continued employment decisions. Enhanced Candidate Evaluation is achieved by utilizing this method, providing reassurance in the validity of the test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
