Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in East Farmingdale, New York. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing approaches have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair analyses instead of the conventional urine checks. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by employers with zero drug tolerance policies, within courts, and for probation cases. The chief advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug usage within a 5-day frame, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by trapping markers in its fibers. When taken near the scalp, it allows for around a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it's easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It’s best to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn’t an option, an equivalent amount of body hair should be gathered. When we say head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The core stages in lab processing of drug testing results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a specimen into the lab system. This means confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, giving it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data inputs not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs a swift preliminary assessment for drugs. While Screening effectively rules out drug use for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal purposes. Presumably positive samples from Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is removed from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing highly challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples suspected positive are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, thus results are more reliable.
  • Tracks patterns: Offers an overview of drug use patterns, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Clarification: Though termed as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
