Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in East White Plains, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we're proficient in hair testing and maintain centers in cities across the nation capable of administering hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be utilized. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, employing hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug screenings. Numerous employers, courts, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those managing probation. Their advantage lies in detecting drug use over a span of up to 90 days, conducted under close observation, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers an extended historical perspective by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair. Sampling hair near the scalp can yield a detection window that spans up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding ten, it is suggested to procure 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for analyzing a drug test result in the lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers an initial expedited assessment for drug misuse. It is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal settings. Samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

In instances where the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluids, rendering hair drug screening the most complex approach to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes a washing process if needed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing the precision of the outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair coloration and individual hair growth anomalies might influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
