Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Eastchester, NY. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area, providing testing centers nationwide capable of conducting hair analysis. Individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or elsewhere as an alternative. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer various tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a prevalent method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly request hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests appeal to zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation due to their primary advantage: the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, which grows continuously, a detailed record of substance use is formed. When collected near the scalp, hair testing can uncover substance use for up to three months. This method is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send off for analysis.

A sample close to the scalp, measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness), provides 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for both initial screening and subsequent verification. For the detection of EtG, expanded panels, or assays exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is impossible to collect, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used instead. When we mention head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This procedure checks that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not handled by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for the presence of illicit substances. While this step is an efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening are then subjected to further Confirmation testing.

When a Screening test indicates a probable positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair in significantly lower amounts than other techniques like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging testing methods.

The Confirmation stage for any positive result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete examination from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests that have shorter detection intervals, hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days back.
  • Low potential for manipulation: The integrity of hair drug tests is such that tampering is extremely difficult, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Captures usage trends: This type of testing can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair strands.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations found in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
