Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Edwards, New York. Patients needing hair alcohol or drug assessments can rely on our expertise, as we have centers across all cities in the nation that facilitate these tests. Typically, possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head suffices, though body hair may also work. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific options.

The preference for employing hair follicle tests over traditional methods has increased recently. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance experts favor hair tests over urine tests. With policies against drug use, employers, courts, and probation systems often choose hair tests for their longer detection window, usually up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, comparatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) situated nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which constitutes the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For more detailed tests like EtG, and tests that exceed 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is lacking, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes its first stage of processing into the lab’s system. This procedure ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift examination for substance misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to stand in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of executing hair drug screening.

To confirm any positive screening result, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Any samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation follows regulations under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It maps a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
