Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Elba, New York. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we are experts in this area and have facilities available Nationwide to carry out such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is necessary and can be tested for alcohol/ETG or other substances.

In recent times, the practice of drug screening has increasingly relied on hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation departments often prefer hair tests because their detection window spans up to 90 days, they are conducted through observed collection, and they minimize the risk of cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term information about alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When gathered near the head, hair can reveal drug or alcohol exposure for up to a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a precision scale, like a jeweler’s scale, to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. In reference to head hair, this denotes scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in how a lab processes a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a specimen within a lab's framework. This process confirms that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening assesses potential drugs of abuse at an overview level. Although Screening is an economical option to exclude drug use in many samples, any positive results must be confirmed for court viability. Samples exhibiting preliminary positivity during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If the Screening stage flags a sample as potentially positive, additional hair is retrieved from the initial material for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair in lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is recognized as a challenging process.

To verify any positive initial test outcomes, Confirmation employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that appear positive initially receive a wash before confirmation when necessary. The complete analysis cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair analysis can identify drug use spanning 90 days, unlike urine tests that have limited detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Compared to other tests, altering a hair drug test result is significantly more difficult, enhancing its reliability.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reflects a history of drug usage over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually incur higher costs relative to alternative drug detection methods.
  • Diverse results: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair samples.

Note: While commonly labeled as “hair follicle tests”, the analysis evaluates the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Elba, NY

Nationwide, hair follicle testing is favored over urine tests due to a wider detection window and better reliability in results. This form of testing captures long-term drug use, providing an extensive assessment of an individual's history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
