Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ellenburg Depot, NY. Specializing in hair tests for both drugs and alcohol, we have facilities in every major city nationwide equipped to conduct these evaluations. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, with body hair also an option. Our hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing services.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug tests over recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor hair tests for their extended detection periods — up to 90 days. While nearly foolproof, for drugs used within the past five days, urine tests still reign in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, hair retains a prolonged history of substance exposure. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to a three-month window of alcohol and drug usage. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch hair segment, around 200 strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg—the optimal sample volume for analysis. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be used. Head hair specifies only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process comprises four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's initial integration into the lab's system. This step confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive finding requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to subvert: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It illustrates drug use trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
