Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Erin, New York. Whether you need a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing, combined with numerous testing centers nationwide, ensures accessibility. Typically requiring 1.5-2 inches of hair, tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over urine testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests due to zero-tolerance policies. Hair testing offers a detection period of up to 90 days, while being collected under observation, making evasion nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain superior within the initial 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a timeline of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the emerging strand itself. When procured proximal to the scalp, hair offers approximately a 90-day detection span for alcohol and substances. It is easy to collect, fairly challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial entry into a lab’s protocol. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening conducts an initial quick check for substance misuse. Although Screening is a thrifty way to dismiss drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation for legal acceptability. Any screenings yielding a presumptive positive necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is prepared for Extraction. At this phase, substances are drawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug screening poses the most difficulty compared to other methodologies.

Positive screening results are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preliminary positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Cheating resistance: Cheating on a hair test is markedly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing usually costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
