Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fair Haven, New York. If you're seeking a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers located in every city nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Increasingly in recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation for their long detection period, up to 90 days, almost guaranteeing against deceptive practices. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can supply up to a 3-month period for the detection of alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equal to a #2 pencil in width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedures involve four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the early processing of a sample into the lab system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening represents an initial rapid evaluation for abusive drugs. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to stand in court. Samples that are likely positive in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Preparation. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations here than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any screening positive outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests spot drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test proves to be very difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It displays a trend of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
