Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Fernwood, New York. If a drug or alcohol hair test is required, we offer specialized services in hair testing with accessible centers in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a more preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are now opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This testing method is preferred for zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation conditions because it offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and its witnessed collection process makes it nearly impossible to falsify. In contrast, for immediate drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged history by encapsulating biomarkers within the fiber of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for a period of up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or those testing beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the quantity on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The procedure involves four critical phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, whereby a laboratory incorporates a sample into its records. This step confirms the sample's integrity during transportation, generates a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data registration not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step involves an initial rapid assessment for potential drug use. While Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that return a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a diminished concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of positive screenings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug testing can track drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests present a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug testing is hard to falsify, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can indicate a timeline of drug consumption, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Can't trace recent usage: Drugs are typically detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can affect metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
