Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fishers Island, New York. Specializing in hair testing, our centers nationwide, including in all major cities, provide reliable hair or alcohol testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary. These tests effectively screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs utilize these tests due to their extended drug detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with an on-site collection process that's tough to manipulate. For drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample’s integrity during sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data that may not have been provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis is the most challenging to perform.

Confirmatory testing of any positive screening findings is conducted using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: The complexity in manipulating hair tests enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of substance use, as opposed to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth can alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
