In Forestville, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at these evaluations, with facilities accessible in cities throughout the United States. Generally, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be sourced from the head or body. Hair sampling can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and supports custom analysis needs.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored option for substance evaluation. Companies, legal systems, and substance specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance policies by employers, judiciary demands, and impose stringent protocols for probationary subjects. They offer the advantage of identifying drug use over extended periods, typically up to 90 days, with direct oversight during collection and reducing opportunities for manipulation. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine assessments remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged profile of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. Collecting hair from the scalp provides a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) sourced near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideally suited for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although it is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is retrieved and prepped for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening as a highly complex methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under the CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test heightens result accuracy.
  • Reflects historical usage: Provides insight into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing costs more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
