Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fort Ann, New York. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method with facilities situated Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. These tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for other bespoke hair testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for screening substances. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Hair tests are employed by organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation. This method's main advantage is its ability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that is very hard to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by containing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, it gives up to a three-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, somewhat tamper-resistant, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an efficient measure to eliminate drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples showing potential positivity in Screening require a further confirmation.

If a sample indicates potential positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers an insight into a pattern of drug use over time, not confined to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior detection advantages over urine tests in Fort Ann, NY. Its longer detection window provides a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history. In contrast, urine tests often fail to identify drug use beyond a short period, making hair testing a more reliable option for discerning clients.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Fort Ann, NY, benefit from hair follicle tests' extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days. This lengthy window allows for an insightful review of an individual's past substance usage, aiding in informed decision-making regarding employees and applicants, thereby supporting a comprehensive approach to substance monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
