Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Franklin, New York. Those in need of a test will find our centers nationwide, capable of conducting thorough hair testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, which can be taken from the head or body. These tests are versatile, checking for various drugs and alcohol/ETG, with options for specialized testing.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has become common in drug screening processes. Many institutions, like employers enforcing zero tolerance, courts, and substance abuse services, prefer hair tests over regular urine tests. This is due to hair tests having a longer detection timeline of up to 90 days and being nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of drug testing results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes confirmation that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary check for drug use. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be valid in court. Samples that are likely positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is likely positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Potential result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Franklin, NY, hair follicle testing is preferred due to its superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. This method offers comprehensive insight, maintaining a longer detection window and exhibiting less vulnerability to evasion techniques. These properties highlight why it has become a prime choice for employers and legal entities seeking consistent results.

Comparisons against urine analyses emphasize reliability and accuracy. While urine tests are common, the extended detection period and near impossibility of result tampering with hair testing showcase its advantages in substance monitoring, making it a top choice in contemporary testing strategies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Franklin, NY, allows for an extended detection window for drug use, spanning up to 90 days. This broad timeframe provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, aiding employers in informed decision-making regarding applicants or current employees.

With a wider window, hair tests reveal pertinent information about long-term drug use that may not be captured by other testing methods. This key advantage ensures employers have a thorough understanding of potential or current employee behavior, supporting workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Franklin, NY, present a tamper-resistant testing methodology that significantly reduces the risks associated with sample adulteration. This ensures the provision of reliable and unassailable results, ultimately fostering trust in these testing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
