Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Freedom Plains, New York. If you're looking for a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this domain, with centers located across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Employers, judicial courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. They offer the advantage of a longer detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection and making it hard to falsify results. However, urine tests remain the most precise method for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month window for detection of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, wherein a sample is introduced into a laboratory's system. It involves verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive initially in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If samples are found to be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments typically have higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves examining the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
