Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Frewsburg, New York. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we're specialized in hair testing with centers all across the Nation available for such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed, or body hair may suffice. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug testing purposes. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, probationary bodies, and legal systems due to their extensive detection of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in its fibers, hair retains a prolonged record of these substances. Sampling hair from near the scalp can reveal a trace history of alcohol and drugs covering a span of approximately 90 days. It's straightforward to collect, quite challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch locks sample with roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred sample mass for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to verify the specimen's mass using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can serve as a substitute. "Head hair" pertains explicitly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" references all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory handling of a drug test outcome, four primary steps ensue: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This entails confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and mailed, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any data input not already covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening conducts a preliminary swift evaluation for misuse drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Hence, any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand secondary validation.

If a sample seems positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are culled from hair at much diminutive concentrations than in alternative techniques (like urine or oral fluid), reflecting hair drug screening’s complexity.

Subsequent Confirmation of any positive screener happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples receive washes as necessary before Confirmation. Each laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation endures review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screens can trace drug aftermaths across 90 days, unlike urine testing with a briefer detection span.
  • Tamper-proof: Tampering hair drug evaluations proves drastically arduous, rendering outcomes more precise.
  • Chronological insight: The assessment unveils a chronology of drug activity across time, not limiting just to contemporary use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use untraceable: It roughly takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair analyses typically cost more compared to other drug test forms.
  • Outcome variance: Drug metabolite levels in hair might vary due to hair color and personal hair growth variability.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", only the hair strand is analyzed, not the underlying follicle in the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
