Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Furnace Woods, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has profound expertise in hair testing and operates centers nationwide, including in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing methods.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly shifted towards utilizing hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals find hair follicle drug tests invaluable. A key advantage of these tests is their extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under strict observation, and very difficult to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has increasingly become acknowledged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collecting hair near the scalp can yield a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation processes. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is processed into the lab's system. This includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court admissible. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive result arises in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drug concentration from hair is isolated at levels much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirming any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The total laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: The integrity of a hair drug test is difficult to compromise, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Excels Over Urine Testing in Furnace Woods, NY

Hair testing proves more effective than urine testing, offering superior detection capabilities and reliability. The extended detection window of hair tests captures a more comprehensive picture of substance use, while urine tests fall short in identifying older use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
