Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Gardnertown, NY. Whether you're seeking a hair test for substances or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation ensuring seamless testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary for processing. Our evaluations accurately test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. Businesses, legal institutions, and addiction specialists increasingly prefer hair tests over urine samples. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation departments utilize hair tests. Major advantages include longer drug use detection—up to 90 days—undertaken through supervised sample collection, making evasion almost impossible. Still, for determining drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The four key phases in processing a drug test result at the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples presumed to be positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Each positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior accuracy and extended detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a broader window to uncover substance use, contributing to more reliable results in Gardnertown, NY. Extended Detection Window

With an impressive detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle tests offer a comprehensive view of substance history in Gardnertown, NY. This extended period grants employers a thorough assessment of potential or current employees, enhancing the effectivity of drug monitoring programs and fostering a safer work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
