Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gates Center, New York. For those needing drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers across all major cities in the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation officers. The major advantage is their extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, with a secure observation process, making them hard to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair-based evaluations are now regarded as a highly effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair fiber. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. The process of obtaining hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) positioned closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is deemed optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, obtaining 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The central stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for potential drug misuse. While Screening presents a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use across a majority of samples, a positive indication during Screening mandates verification to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples showing potential positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit potential positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves the extraction of drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All potential positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Fraud resistance: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over an extended timeline, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair pigmentation and individual disparities in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
