In Gorham, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is unmatched. We have testing centers across the country, ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be analyzed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

The hair follicle drug testing method has gained popularity in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for this test over the conventional urine test. Such tests are beneficial for organizations with strict drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation cases. They offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making them nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair provides an extensive record of substance consumption by capturing markers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped close to the head, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's circumference) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If head hair isn't obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only the hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into the lab's system. This process involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be substantiated for legal purposes. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an account of drug usage over time, not limited to immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the assay evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
