Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Grandyle Village, NY. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are accepted. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted as the preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair-based tests over urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation departments use these tests due to their prolonged detection ability up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering, though urine remains best for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a formidable approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested that the sample be measured using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for processing drug test outcomes comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary test for substances of abuse. While Screening economically screens the majority of samples, positive results must be verified to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening require confirmatory testing.

For samples found to be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are pre-washed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a limited window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's quite hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Yields historical data: It delivers a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
