Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Greenport, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair testing, with testing centers nationwide prepared to conduct hair analysis. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common procedure for drug detection. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair testing's chief advantage is its longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to cheating. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures the long-term use history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the expanding hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair provides approximately a 3-month window for alcohol and drug detection. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. 'Body hair' denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means for ruling out drug consumption for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require secondary verification.

Presumptive positive samples in the Screening phase undergo further hair extraction from the initial specimen and preparation for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to tampering, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern insight: Provides insight on patterns of drug use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often named "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
