Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Hampton Bays, New York. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, look no further. Our nationwide network of testing centers is equipped to carry out these tests. Generally, you'll need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method in recent years, increasingly favored by courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Many organizations, especially those with strict no-drug policies, rely on hair tests for their accuracy and extended detection capabilities. Although urine tests are more effective for recent drug use within the last 5 days, hair tests can confirm drug use for up to 90 days and are almost impossible to manipulate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within its strands during growth. When samples are taken near the scalp, they offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and transportation is hassle-free.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable mass of body hair can be used. References to head hair indicate scalp hair only. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is entered into a laboratory system. It includes ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically excludes drug usage in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection timelines.
  • Challenging to fake: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug usage pattern over a stretch of time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costs: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
