Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hartwick, NY. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing ensures that we can meet your needs. We have testing facilities throughout the nation capable of performing hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is required for testing. Hair tests encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and individuals on probation for their efficacy. The main advantage is a prolonged detection period for drug use, usually up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and avoiding tampering. Still, urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair encapsulate a prolonged account of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers in the growing hair. Closely cut hair can reveal a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for testing and verification. With EtG, additional tests, or examinations above 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair may suffice. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of drug testing results involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial laboratory processing of a sample. This process verifies proper sample sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening efficiently precludes drug use in most cases, any positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive findings in Screening require secondary verification.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, thus making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

The Confirmation of positive screenings is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before we confirm if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug testing is challenging to falsify, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical information: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, unlike tests showing only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: These tests, often termed "hair follicle tests", examine the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
