In Hillside Lake, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our focus is on hair testing, and we have a network of testing facilities in cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are employed by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective resource for detecting the presence of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, hair serves as a historical record over an extended period. When cut close to the scalp, it offers up to roughly a three-month window for identifying alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests beyond 10 panels, EtG, or additional options, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample upon its entry into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to hold up in legal situations. Any samples initially testing positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

When a sample returns a presumptive positive outcome at the Screening stage, additional hair from the original specimen is retrieved and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at noticeably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives are pre-treated through washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, outperforming urine tests that offer shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: Shows a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to find recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other approaches.
  • Result variability: Individual hair growth rate and color can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests" colloquially, the test assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hillside Lake, NY, hair follicle testing offers a clear advantage over urine testing. The longer detection window and superior accuracy ensure a more reliable assessment of substance use, making it suitable for employers enforcing stringent drug-free policies. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
