Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hoffman, New York. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist. Our nationwide network includes testing facilities in every city capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair samples can be tested for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. An increasing number of employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine testing methods. These tests serve companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, often lasting up to 90 days, ensuring minimal chances of tampering. Nevertheless, for detection of drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands retain a long-term record of biomarkers associated with alcohol and drugs as they grow. When collected close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat difficult to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, enhanced tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system, which includes verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test positive in the Screening stage need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, thus improving result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It displays a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detectability in hair takes around 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
