In Hortonville, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for testing. Hair analyses are versatile, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or providing tailored options.

Over recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has grown, supplementing traditional methods. This testing is increasingly favored by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employed by organizations with stringent drug-free mandates, judicial systems, and probation services, hair follicle testing boasts a significantly extended detection capacity of up to 90 days. Its collection process is observed, minimizing falsification risks. Nonetheless, for the most accurate results within a recent 5-day interval, urine testing prevails.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, we are referring solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step comprises verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective measure for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that screen positive presumptively require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection period.
  • High resistance to cheating: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test results in more accurate findings.
  • Historical data provision: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
