At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hudson Falls, NY. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing. With locations in all cities across the nation, we conduct hair tests efficiently. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach to drug testing. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Its main advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to falsify. However, for tracing recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake. When collected near the scalp, hair can present up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for assessment and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab system, including ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any extra data gaps, if absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive after Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most demanding method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening finding is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can spot drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
