Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hunt, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide, including all cities, to facilitate testing. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, hair samples can be screened for a range of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly prevalent in recent times. Such tests are preferred by many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation-related circumstances all favor hair follicle tests for their extended detection capabilities, which can identify drug use for up to 90 days through a monitored collection process, making tampering challenging. For substances used in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged use history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch sample, roughly consisting of 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening effectively addresses most samples’ drug usage due to its cost-effectiveness, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample demonstrate a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests in detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test presents significant challenges, thereby increasing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: A pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use, is provided.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to commonly as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
