Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Jefferson Valley, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise lies in hair testing, with locations available nationwide for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for most assessments. Analysis is possible for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method of drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. They offer a longer detection period of drug use, usually up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a lengthy history of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month timeframe for the detection of alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, this specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Avoiding detection in a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jefferson Valley, NY, the benefits of hair follicle testing surpass those of traditional urine tests. Hair tests detect substances with heightened accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing recognizes drug use several months back, ensuring a thorough analysis of an individual’s substance usage history. This extensive detection window offers significant advantages to employers and other stakeholders.

The superior detection capacity of hair testing compared to urine tests is evident. With a detection period of up to 90 days, hair tests capture repetitive or chronic substance use better than the short window detected by urine tests. This ensures organizations maintain drug-free environments while reducing the risk of recent drug use going undetected.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Jefferson Valley, NY, offers an extended detection window, identifying drug use spanning up to 90 days. This makes it an indispensable tool for employers aiming for a comprehensive evaluation of an applicant or employee’s substance history. The extended timeframe supports organizations striving for safer and more compliant workplaces.

The expansive window for detecting drug use is critically beneficial for employers. By going beyond immediate past substance use, hair follicle tests provide a broader picture, helping organizations make informed employment decisions. The ability to detect sustained or chronic drug use is a distinct advantage over shorter-term tests like urine testing.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing stands out in Jefferson Valley, NY, for its tamper-resistant nature, minimizing sample adulteration risks. This robust testing method offers reliable and unquestionable results, bolstering confidence among employers and other stakeholders. Its design inherently discourages attempts at sample tampering, ensuring the validity of the results.

Reducing the risk of sample manipulation is crucial, and hair follicle tests accomplish this effectively. Collection methods are designed to capture authentic samples, significantly curbing any opportunities for adulteration. This elevates the trustworthiness of results, satisfying stringent testing needs without compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
