Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jeffersonville, New York. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across the nation, including every city, where a hair test can be conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be used for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Various employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts are choosing hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method appeals to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to its extensive detection window which can reveal drug use for up to 90 days. Collection is observed and nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing drug and alcohol use through hair testing is recognized as a potent method. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. Collecting hair near the scalp offers an alcoholic and drug detection range of roughly up to 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in about 100mg of hair, providing an optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, it implies scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system, which includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid drug check. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug use on most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

All positive screening outcomes undergo confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is considerably difficult to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a drug usage trend over time and not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
