Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug checks in Jordan, NY. Whether you're looking for drug or alcohol tests via hair, we're experts in hair testing, with centers nationwide to assist. Typically, hair from the crown or any body part measuring 1.5 to 2 inches can be tested. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specially tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are shifting from urine to hair drug tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, legal bodies, and probation officers. Their main advantage is a longer detection timeline—up to 90 days—ensuring accuracy through observed sample collection, making it hard to manipulate results. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting very recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair affords a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can yield around a three-month detection window for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For testing involving EtG, additional tests, or panels exceed 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is insufficient, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipping, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick assessment for drug substances. It serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples; however, a positive result in Screening must be substantiated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening mandate further validation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary before Confirmation. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, contrary to just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually analyzes the hair strand itself instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Jordan, NY
Hair tests overshadow urine tests through superior detection accuracy and reliability. The capability to trace drug use back for 90 days far exceeds the limited scope of typical urine testing, making hair testing the go-to solution for comprehensive screening.

Additionally, the consistency in results from hair testing eliminates doubts, setting a new standard in testing efficacy that's preferred in Jordan, NY.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Jordan, NY
The ability of hair follicle testing to track substance use over a span of 90 days provides employers with a detailed profile of an individual's drug history. This extended detection period is especially beneficial for comprehensive assessments.

Employing such tests helps businesses maintain a drug-free environment by thoroughly understanding the historical substance use of potential candidates or existing employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Jordan, NY
Hair follicle tests are remarkably tamper-proof compared to other methods. The difficulty in altering or substituting the sampled hair offers truly reliable outcomes. This robust integrity ensures the results are trustworthy and legally sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
