Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Kent, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing excel in hair testing with centers all over the nation that are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Such tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a method for drug testing. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are invaluable for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and individuals on probation. A primary advantage of this kind of test is its longer detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, conducted through a monitored collection process to prevent tampering. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests are still more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can capture a comprehensive history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial setup of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial fast check for drugs of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient manner to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
