Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in La Fargeville, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, look no further. Specializing in hair analysis, our centers span across all cities Nationwide, ready to perform tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on any body part suffices. Hair tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies favor hair tests due to extended detection periods, up to 90 days, nearly impossible to tamper with when collected under observation. However, urine tests remain more accurate for very recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has garnered recognition as an effective method to identify the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair yields a detection window of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and it can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered the best sample for testing and confirming. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial and rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a challenging technique.

Confirming any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to ninety days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Cheat resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical analysis: It can provide a timeline of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
