Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Lansing, New York. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol tests, with locations in every major city nationwide ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored drug screenings.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair testing to urine tests. This method is favored due to its longer detection period of up to 90 days and secure sampling process, making it difficult to tamper with. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for identifying drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can provide up to a 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair might be used. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs to be verified to be legally acceptable. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most intricate methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Lansing, NY, hair follicle testing proves superior over traditional urine tests. This method offers precise detection of substance use, providing results that are both reliable and accurate. Compared to urine testing, hair follicle tests cover a more extensive detection window.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
