Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing within Leeds, New York. When you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is known for its hair testing expertise, with testing centers available nationwide to perform the necessary tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair; hair from the body may be used. Hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing often includes hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation turn to hair follicle testing. Its main advantage is a longer drug use detection window, usually up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, making cheating almost impossible. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly considered a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other drug consumption by ensnaring biomarkers within its growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can yield up to an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for testing and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory stages for processing a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This procedure includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for detecting drug abuse. While cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample indicating a presumptive positive in Screening requires further confirmation.

Should screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug testing's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is extraordinarily challenging, which ensures more accurate results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Hair analysis can indicate a timeframe of drug use patterns, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When evaluating Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Leeds, NY, the advantages of hair over traditional urine tests shine. Hair testing detects drug use with superior accuracy, boasting a long detection window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
